Counseling with An Experienced Psychotherapist

If you struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem or relational issues, or have experienced trauma that challenges living your life to its fullest potential, Beth Lee Psychotherapy can help you. I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in New York, and I work with individuals, couples, and families. I practice Psychodynamic Therapy, Somatic Experiencing (SE), Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP), and Integrated Collaborative Therapy. My collaborative approach to therapy supports clients’ healing and deepens their insights into themselves and their relationships, with a goal of emotional resilience, happiness, and wellbeing.

Areas of Focus

Anxiety & Stress

Panic attacks, social anxiety, performance anxiety, generalized anxiety, and stress.

Trauma

Trauma results from a deeply distressing experience. The founder of Somatic Experiencing, Peter Levine, says that “trauma originates in the nervous system, not in the event.” Trauma symptoms can include PTSD, physiological symptoms like headaches, nausea, and asthma, among many other somatic symptoms. Trauma interferes and inhibits functioning.

Depression

Lack of joy in your life, suicidal thoughts, low self-esteem, feeling stuck, or lacking motivation.

Relational Issues

Present-day issues can often be traced back to our earliest relationships. The key to understanding and changing present-day relationships is recognizing negative patterns of interaction that impact our current relationships and learning how to change those patterns.

Types of Therapies Offered

Psychodynamic Therapy (Talk Therapy)

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on deepening one's understanding of emotions and thoughts through talking, to help clients have greater insight into themselves, and thus be able to improve their judgment in decision making and improve all-around well being.

EMDR *Not offered over zoom

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a type of therapy that helps people heal from the symptoms of emotional distress caused by traumatic past life events. By using specific protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians can help their clients activate their natural healing processes.

Integrated Collaborative Therapy (for couples and families)

My colleague and I offer a new approach to couple and family therapy; we call this modality Integrated Collaborative Therapy. As two therapists trained in family and couples work, we have found that often one person can feel less heard or understood by the therapist. We decided to develop a model to alleviate that problem. We work collaboratively, each seeing one member of the couple individually and then we meet as a group. This way, each individual has their therapist present during couple sessions. In between sessions, we confer with each other and plan for upcoming sessions. We find that our clients who engage in our model feel more supported by both therapists and the individual work is more effective because we understand the relational patterns and dynamics between the couple, having experienced it first hand. When we work with a family consisting of more than two people, we discuss with the family to determine how we can best support each member of the family using our collaborative approach. We've been doing this work since 2018 and have found it to be very successful.

Somatic Experiencing (SE)

A body-based approach to healing trauma and feelings of overwhelm that honors the body's wisdom. It is a body-based therapy that helps heal trauma by focusing on how our bodies hold onto the trauma in our implicit memory. This form of therapy seeks to re-awaken our intrinsic capacity for regulating our autonomic nervous system

Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP)

An effective body-based therapy that helps one heal by supporting clients to fully embody their emotions, which leads to increased capacity to tolerate difficult emotions and to healing.
